Mighty River Power relaunches highly anticipated Photographic Competition

Photographers interested in the Waikato-Taupo region once again have the chance to snap at a share of the $12,500 prize pool in the Mighty River Power Photographic Competition.

Following on from the success of last year's event, the electricity generator is mounting the event for a second time.

Mighty River Power General Manager External Affairs Neil Williams says over 200 entries were received in 2002 and the community response inspired the company to maintain support for the competition.

"The response we received from local communities was fantastic and we are looking forward to receiving a range of interesting and talented entries. We have had calls from the public asking if we were running the competition again," he says.

The competition is open to secondary and tertiary students, and non-professional photographers. Entrants can enter their works under one of four themes: landscape, documentary, portraiture and contemporary art.

Once again, entrants can shoot whatever they like providing it explores some aspect of the Waikato-Taupo region or its people and fits within one of the four themes. Each participant can enter up to four photographic works.

The prize pool consists of $12,000 in individual cash prizes and the Waikato Times will also be making a special award of $500. The school and tertiary institution attended by the winners of these categories will each receive $500.

Mr Williams says Mighty River Power has been part of the Waikato-Taupo landscapes, communities and environment since 1929 when the first dam, Arapuni, was completed.

"In recognition of our unique position, we're pleased to provide an opportunity for photographers interested in the communities we operate in to capture an aspect of that region on film."

To enter, look for an entry form in the Waikato Times on Saturdays throughout August-September. Entries close Friday 17 October 2002. Winners will be announced in the Waikato Times and presented with their awards at a special function in Hamilton in November. Their works will then be exhibited at venues around the region over the following months.
