Sony Takes Business & Multimedia to Next Level

Sony Takes Business and Multimedia Handheld to the Next Level

AUCKLAND - 8 August 2003 - Sony NZ Ltd is launching a stylish new "Wing Design" flip and rotate style CLIÉ(tm) ,the PEGNX80VG ("NX80"), designed to increase enjoyment and further enhance business communication. Featuring more built-in software and increased memory, the NX80 also boasts a 1.3 Mega Pixel CCD rotating camera to capture everyday moments.

To complement the imaging technology, the NX80 also features integrated audio for both visual and audio entertainment applications. Now video footage and music can be enjoyed during long business trips or after-work, with added wireless options for both Bluetooth(tm) (with optional PEGAMSB1 Bluetooth Memory Stick Module) and Wi-Fi(tm) (with optional PEGAWL100 Wireless LAN Card).

"We have really extended our CLIÉ(tm) range this year to ensure that there is something for everyone. The new CLIÉ(tm) NX class is great for busy people who want the most out of their handheld. It strikes a great balance between form and function, features and ease of use," says Jo Walsh Senior Product Manager, Sony NZ Ltd.

Great visual with built-in digital camera

On the hinge between the LCD screen and keyboard, the new CLIÉ(tm) NX80 has a 1.3 Mega Pixel CCD rotatable camera with a "Capture Light"; a battery-saving technology that illuminates subjects in dimly lit conditions. The camera also features a Neutral Density Filter that helps to reduce over-exposure of images taken in sunny conditions.

The digital camera rotates 300 degrees, capturing images up to 1280 x 960 dots and recording up to 120 minutes of continuous Movie Player format video clips (160 x 112 dots) when in use with an optional 128MB Memory Stick.

Additional CompactFlash(tm) Card Slot

At the back of the unit is a redesigned CompactFlash(tm) Card slot that pops out with a simple flick of a switch. With the NX80, Sony has expanded the capabilities of the CompactFlash(tm) Card slot to support select CompactFlash(tm) Cards for the storage and access of supported applications and data files*1. The CompactFlash(tm) Card slot also allows the handheld greater flexibility with other connecting products. In addition, users can transfer files of all types from Memory Stick(tm) to CompactFlash(tm) Card without having to rely on a PC.

Subtle Improvements deliver Concrete Results

To improve usability, Sony has pre-installed all of the Sony original application software into the ROM memory (increased to 32MB). This minimises the set-up time associated with many standard devices based on Palm OS® software, eliminates the need to reinstall the applications in the event that battery life should be completely depleted, and makes more RAM space available for storage on the CLIÉ NX80VG model (16MB useable). Sony has also added Decuma(tm) Input Handwriting Recognition software option to the new model, which recognises the full 26-character alphabet when written in printed letters. Users can select either this or the Graffiti® 2 software for character entry.

Connectivity Options

Offering expansion capabilities beyond the full list of integrated features, Sony has also included Bluetooth connectivity with the NX80 by using Bluetooth Module (PEGAMSB1), allowing users to wirelessly connect to and share the features of similarly enabled devices. With the pre-installed NetFront v.3.0 for CLIE, users can wirelessly access the Internet and e-mail via their compatible Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones that are set up with corresponding ISP services.

The CLIÉ NX80 also features an integrated communications slot that accommodates an optional Wireless LAN Card the PEGAWL100 (802.11b), capable of receiving information wirelessly . With a Wi-Fi access point and corresponding ISP, users can browse the Internet, send and receive e-mail (POP3 and SMTP), and perform HotSync® operations wirelessly with a Wi-Fi enabled PC.

"Connectivity in the home, in the office and on the move is a vital part of today's society and therefore Sony understands the need for people to access the web on the go," Jo says. "Wirelessly communicating with a mobile phone or broadband access point and having it act as a wireless modem means you can be constantly connected to the world around you without being tied to your desk."

The new CLIÉ(tm) NX80 will be available at SonyStyle showrooms and retailers nationally from August 2003 for $1,349.00
