Tranz Rail gets a big tick following safety audit

Tranz Rail is delighted to have achieved a 'Primary level' pass in the ACC Workplace Safety Management Practice (WSMP) Audits which took place over the past two months.

The WSMP programme was developed by ACC to encourage employers to create and maintain safer workplaces. In return for putting in place systems and processes for managing and improving workplace safety, employers receive discounts on their ACC premiums.

Tranz Rail General Manager Health and Safety Nicole Rosie, says this is a positive result for the company and provides us with the Health and Safety framework and benchmark for continuous improvements.

It is a compliment to our staff as less than 20 per cent of New Zealand companies have achieved this standard and it covers all aspects of health and safety management.

This result shows the huge effort that has gone into dramatically improving the safety record of Tranz Rail. Our Lost Time Injury Frequency rate has nearly halved from the 8.8% per 200,000-hours- worked figure recorded in 1999 to a new low level of just 4.8% for the past 12 months.

Tranz Rail will now be subject to an ongoing external audit regime to maintain and improve our status, says Ms Rosie.
