Final 25 Selected for Entrepreneur of the Year Award

Twenty five finalists, from a cross section of New Zealand businesses, have been selected for the 6th Annual Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.
The New Zealand competition is part of a global series of events, held in 30 countries, with the aim of celebrating entrepreneurial enterprise and success.

According to Award Director Carol Campbell, the final 25 compete for titles in six categories including Young Entrepreneur, Master Entrepreneur (both non-industry specific), Manufacturing, Services/Retail, Technology/Communications and Property Construction.

The finalists from each of these six sections then have the opportunity to win the coveted Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

“All the entries, but particularly the finalists, reflect the diversification of New Zealand’s 21st Century economy. From our inception we’ve been impressed with the calibre of both entrants and their enterprises. This year the impact of some of the ‘emerging’ industries, such as entertainment and fashion design, are starting to show through,” she said.

According to Carol Campbell, the purpose of the Awards are to recognise, and celebrate, the contribution these business ‘adventurers’ make to New Zealand’s global competitiveness and economic success.

“The word ‘entrepreneur’ is often bandied about without people really understanding the meaning of the word, or the spirit of the people who truly deserve the title. Our Award brings the concept to life by honouring people who are not just good at business but who also are risk takers, who are passionate, who are determined and who have vision,” she said.

The Awards ceremony will take place in Auckland on October 8th. The overall winner of the Entrepreneur of the Year, and their partner, will attend the international award ceremony in Palm Springs, California, in November 2003.
In mid-2004 the New Zealand winner will represent the country at the 4th Annual World Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in Europe.
