Rebel Sport becomes naming sponsor of Super 12 rugby

Rebel Sport has taken up naming rights to New Zealand’s participation in Super 12 rugby for the next two years under a sponsorship agreement announced today with the New Zealand Rugby Union. Under the agreement, the 2004 and 2005 Super 12 competitions will be known as the Rebel Sport Super 12.

The Managing Director of Briscoe Group, Rod Duke, said the sponsorship was a major marketing initiative for the company and would play an important role in the continuing development of the Rebel Sport brand.

“Rebel Sport has been particularly successful since its launch in New Zealand in 1996, growing to 16 stores around New Zealand and engendering very strong customer support. This growth will continue, with five store openings likely next year and more planned for the following year.

“The awareness and support generated through sponsorship of the Rebel Sport Super 12 will certainly assist in making the continued expansion successful. There will be a strong suite of supporting activity, including in-store merchandising, exposure in conjunction with Sky Television, half-time promotions, ground signage and other promotions. The sponsorship and supporting activities will dovetail with our continuing nationwide advertising campaign.

“We are confident that the total marketing programme will enhance the positioning of Rebel Sport as the first-choice retailer in the sporting apparel and sporting goods categories.”

The Chief Executive of the New Zealand Rugby Union, Mr Chris Moller, said the rugby union was delighted to enter into a partnership with Rebel Sport around the Rebel Sport Super 12.

“We see the relationship as a good fit. The Super 12 is all about high-quality, fast-paced action, excitement and entertainment, in line with the values and products of Rebel Sport,” Mr Moller said. He said Rebel Sport’s history as one of the leading suppliers of Super 12-related merchandise made the company a natural naming rights partner for the competition.

Mr Duke said Rebel Sport’s stores would get in behind the Rebel Sport Super 12 competition and offer strong backing to New Zealand’s five teams. “It won’t matter which of our five teams you support, or where you live, there will be a Rebel Sport outlet nearby where you can get along, grab your supporters gear and join in the fun. In fact, there is a Rebel Sport store in all but one New Zealand town that hosts a game next season and we intend that each store becomes the home of the local Super 12 team.”
