Legacy takes local Award

Japan's Car of the Year, the Subaru Legacy has gained a local accolade.

The Sunday Star Times has given the Legacy its Large Car of the Year Award to the sedan and wagon range, which has been progressively launched since the middle of the year.

In October the Legacy was the supreme winner in its home market and headed off several six-cylinder rivals to take the national circulation weekly publication's award here.

"We don't really consider the Legacy a large car," said Wallis Dumper, the General Manager of Subaru of New Zealand, "although it is certainly very roomy in its class and the wagons can swallow a large amount of luggage."

The Legacy range was also a finalist in the New Zealand Herald's Car of the Year Award.

Both the Herald and Sunday Star Times liked the quality of finish of the Legacy, comparing it to many luxury car offerings, using superlatives such as “superb,” “luxurious” and “complete.”

While the wagon model has traditionally been the Legacy's strength, it was noted the new sedan was a stylish, refined offering. And sales success of the Legacy GT Sedan would support that observation with registrations since its July release exceeding the whole of last year’s previous model sales.

Also praised were the variety of models, from the naturally aspirated two litre cars and wagons selling from $37,990 to the range topping GT at $59,990 all standard equipped with Subaru’s unique Symmetrical All Wheel Drive and iconic boxer engine.

The 206 kWs GT was described as the icing on the cake of the Legacy range, offering performance and practicality at a price well below other similar performing rivals.
