Motorists Seek Reasons For Increasing Fuel Prices

“Motorists are asking what are the reasons for the continuing increases in petrol, especially when the New Zealand dollar remains so high and continues to strengthen” George Fairbairn, AA Director of Public Affairs said today.

The Automobile Association today stated that motorists want the fuel retailers to provide the details of these increases, when fuel prices have increased again for the second time since the New Year.

The Association has observed that prices at the pump have increased by at least 7 cents per litre in many parts of the country since the beginning of January, with the price of 91 Octane increasing from an average of 104 cents per litre to now reaching 111 cents per litre.

“The price drop for a short period on two occasions prior to the New Year was welcomed, but the rapidity of the increases since has raised strong concerns across the country” Mr Fairbairn said.

The Association urges motorists to “shop around” for the best prices in their local areas in an endeavour to generate more competition at the pump.
