Meat & Wool New Zealand finally here!


Meat & Wool New Zealand can officially commence operations for meat and wool after Parliament passed the Meat Board restructuring legislation today.

Meat & Wool New Zealand CEO Mark Jeffries is delighted the new farmer-funded organisation can officially start.

“After a nine month journey, which began last August with farmers voting resoundingly to continue red meat and wool levies under the Commodities Levy Act (CLA), I am very pleased that we’re finally at the starting line and Meat & Wool New Zealand can drive forward.”

“We’ve been waiting for this legislation to pass through Government to streamline our operations and now we’re eager to get Meat & Wool NZ moving forward to achieve the goals farmers placed in front of us last August.”

“The passing of the legislation means that, from today the meat levy will be collected under the Commodities Levy Act.”

Jeffries is excited about what the new organisation is going to offer for farmers and other key stakeholders.

“Since December 2002 we’ve been consulting with and listening to what farmers want from the new organisation. I’m confident we’ve got the right people on board to make this organisation a strong and effective organisation delivering measurable and valuable outcomes.”

“I’m pleased that the restructuring has gone smoothly. Many parties have worked together to deliver this outcome on schedule.”

The New Zealand Meat Board will continue to have responsibility for quota management and meat reserve funds.
