Further Success for Fonterra

Mozzarella made at Fonterra’s Whareroa site has taken top honours in its class at the prestigious Nantwich International Cheese Show.

The Taranaki cheese headed off mozzarella from Belgium and Northern Italy to claim first place in the block mozzarella category.

At the same event, butter from Fonterra’s Morrinsville and Te Rapa sites was Very Highly Commended and Highly Commended respectively, while cheddar produced at the company’s Edendale site also received the judges’ commendation.

The Nantwich show, being held this year for the 106th time, regularly attracts more than 1,800 entrants. Fonterra cheese development technologist Wendy Burnand says it is a premier show for the global industry, and this year’s successes continue a strong tradition for Fonterra and its legacy companies.

Vintage cheddar from Fonterra’s Waitoa plant is a previous winner of the Supreme Champion Award at the Nantwich Show, and was last year Very Highly Commended in the past masters’ class.

Fonterra was represented at Nantwich by people as well as products, with Hautapu-based Peter Sinclair and Waitoa cheese plant manager Paul Sweetman serving on the judging panel. Mr Sweetman was last year the first New Zealander to judge at the show.
