Harcourts’ No. 1 Auctioneer Announced as
Best in Country
Harcourts’ Top Auctioneer, Roger
Dawson of Christchurch, was last night again announced as
New Zealand’s top auctioneer in a tough competition against
19 auctioneers from throughout the country.
The REINZ bi-annual National Auctioneer Championship held Monday 6 September in Christchurch included seven Harcourts auctioneers with four finalists (including Harcourts Auckland auctioneer Phil Hayes) returning to the stage yesterday to impress the panel of five judges.
Mr Dawson has shown consistent excellence over recent years, winning the REINZ Auctioneer Championship in 1998, and was a finalist in 2002. He also holds the title of Harcourts’ 2004 Auctioneer of the Year, and was Harcourts’ Auctioneer of the Year in 2000 and 2002.
Joining the real estate industry in 1983, Mr Dawson became an auctioneer in 1987, graduating from the renowned Melbourne Auction School in 1988 and gaining accreditation as a REINZ auctioneer in 1993. He has completed well in excess of 2,500 auctions, and frequently provides his services at no cost for charity and fundraising auctions.
Mr Dawson attributed his consistent success to constant practise, keeping up with trends, ‘raising the bar’ to fine-tune his techniques, and most importantly being able to “read the crowd at an auction to ensure the bidders and buyers are working with you” for a successful result. He added that there was no doubt the strengthening role auctions were playing in selling property with increasing numbers of sellers recognising the advantages of auctions to achieve top results.
CEO of Harcourts New Zealand, Bryan Thomson said, “Roger epitomises all the standards of a professional auctioneer as shown by his many and consistent award wins. This prestigious title also reflects the continuing emphasis Harcourts put on maintaining the highest standards through ongoing training and support.”
Mr Dawson and the competition runner-up will represent New Zealand at the bi-annual Australasian competition in Brisbane September 2005.
