InFact designs supreme plastics award winner
Christchurch company, Talbot Plastics’ success at the 2004 Plastics Industry Design Awards, for the new Provenco outdoor payment terminal, has delighted the product’s designer, InFact.
Talbot Plastics won the 2004 Plastics Industry Design Awards Supreme Award for the POS Terminal Fascia. The in-mould card reader fascia was built to withstand the harsh environment of a service station forecourt, while providing a striking aesthetic appearance and flexibility to include branding and graphics.
“Provenco Retail Automation wanted a terminal
that was both functional and capable of displaying a
uniqueness in it’s design to provide a point of difference,”
says Bruce Jarvis, Provenco Payments Sales and Marketing
Manager.
Nigel Sharplin, Managing Director of InFact,
New Zealand’s largest product design company, points to
exciting international opportunities for in-mould
decoration, design and manufacture. These are areas in which
InFact and Talbot Plastics are now world leaders and where
they have significant Intellectual Property and
experience.
“The aesthetics of the in-mould decoration and the design ability to integrate the lens into the single moulding are important factors in the sales success of the outdoor payment terminal to international corporate customers,” Nigel Sharplin says.
“We would like to congratulate Talbot Plastics on its success. Winning this award is just recognition of the excellence of this product.”
Provenco, the country’s leader in EFTPOS and payment solutions developed the G5OPT to meet the new security requirements (EMV) that have been mandated worldwide to combat credit card fraud. The G5OPT, which provides eftpos capability at the pump, is presently being rolled out by Provenco in Malaysia, to over 500 petrol station sites. Provenco has over 30 years experience in the oil industry. Provenco partnered with Christchurch companies, InFact for the mechanical design services and Talbot Plastics and GPC for the manufacture of the terminals.
InFact, the country’s leading independent supplier of product design services, was appointed to provide the mechanical design element of the product for Provenco. Its brief included designing the award winning in-mould card reader fascia.
“We provide industrial design and product design engineering services to leaders, such as Provenco, in the New Zealand high-tech sector,” Nigel Sharplin says.
InFact started working with Provenco in 1999 developing concepts to establish early market requirements for the G5 OPT. It completed development of the G5OPT terminal in just under a year, working in close collaboration with Provenco, Talbot Plastics and GPC.
InFact fosters such technology partnering to accelerate product innovation, Nigel Sharplin says. The card reader’s fascia evolved from Talbot Plastics’ knowledge in plastics and InFact’s engineering capability.
“InFact’s engineering depth allows the integration of product design requirements with leading production processes to create products which are world firsts,” he says.
He says New Zealand manufacturers must be leaders in technology and process innovation to survive.
“InFact will continue to bring challenging opportunities to Talbot Plastics so the plastics company can continue as a leading technology supplier and partner in its sector.”
The biennial awards are organised by Plastics New Zealand to showcase innovation in the plastics industry and promote excellence in the creation, design, production, manufacture and marketing of plastic products.
Award judges were impressed by the complex nature of the POS Terminal Fascia’s multi-stage production and its international sophistication.
The success in the Plastic Industry Design Awards follows last month’s accolade when the Provenco G5 outdoor payment terminal received a highly commended award at the Design Industry of New Zealand Best Awards.
