Britomart Project In Global Top Ten

The Britomart Transport Centre, designed by Auckland-based company JASMAX and Mario Madayag Ltd, has been recognised by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) as one of the ten best designed projects in the world.

The AIA announced the recipients of the 2004 Business Week / Architectural Records (BW/AR) Awards today. Given annually, the awards honour the architects and clients who best utilise good design to achieve important objectives for organisations, such as marketing products or services, attracting and maintaining a high quality workforce, uplifting the immediate environment and improving the health and wellbeing of employees.

Britomart, at the transport, historical and business hub of Auckland City, is one of five cultural / educational projects this year to receive the BW/AR Award.

JASMAX managing director and Britomart architect, Greg Boyden, says that it marks the beginning of something very significant for the city. The starting point for a rejuvenated downtown area and a working public transport system, the Britomart project celebrates the area’s history and has preserved Auckland’s iconic 1912 Chief Post Office building. It is also initiating the regeneration of adjacent downtown real estate and establishing a safe and lively “destination” area, to incorporate retail, hospitality, and public spaces tailored for both large civic events and pedestrians.

As a project anticipating the city’s continued growth and future identity, it will come into its own to provide a new urban focus for Aucklanders in years to come.
