Record Price for Exceptional Horowhenua Cropping

A 106 hectare Opiki property in Northern Horowhenua more than lived up to its reputation as prize potato and cropping land by achieving a record-breaking price when it was sold late last month.

According to Co-owner of Harcourts Levin, Stuart Pescini, the $46,900 per hectare ($19,000 per acre) achieved exceeded the previous record in the area set in August this year of $16,500 per acre.

Marketed by Tom Childs from Harcourts Levin, the land had been in the same family for close to 50 years. Two brothers owned the adjoining 61 hectare and 45 hectare blocks with one accessed from Wilsons Road and the other from Whitaunui Road.

Mr Childs described it as “exceptional quality with large paddocks tile drained ready for the plough.” A former potato grower himself, Mr Childs said, “quality land like this really comes into its own in challenging climate conditions such as those experienced this year.”

Mr Pescini said the level of enquiry for the property was strong especially from neighbouring farmers. “They certainly appreciated the quality and capability of the land and the owners were naturally delighted with the result.”

Harcourts National Rural Manager, Kim Shannon said the sale price achieved reflected the current buoyant nature of the rural real estate market especially for quality productive land in good locations close to major cities. “Such quality land promoted and marketed correctly continues to achieve premium sale prices on the current rural real estate market,” he added.
