Publishing Maven Appointed As New Editor At Fairfax Magazines

Fairfax Magazines is delighted to announce the appointment of Michal McKay as the editor of New Zealand House & Garden and onHoliday – two of New Zealand’s leading magazine titles.

Michal McKay will return home to New Zealand to assume the role of editor next year. She will be known to New Zealand media and magazine readers as a former editor of the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly (1985-1987) but brings a wealth of international experience to the Fairfax stable of magazines with previous roles including; deputy editor Good Housekeeping magazine (UK), editor Vogue (Singapore), associate editor Vogue Australia, fashion & beauty editor Australian Woman’s Weekly and editor of Mode (Australia).

Michal McKay’s current role is as group editorial director for fpc COURIER Newspapers – one of the largest suburban newspaper groups in Australia. Other roles – excluding media – include marketing and development director and associate director for Country Road (Australia), corporate creative director Esteé Lauder (UK) Companies, vice president and creative director Aramis Worldwide (USA) and marketing director BEYMEN (Turkey).

Amanda Murphy, general manager – lifestyle, Fairfax Magazines comments, “We are ecstatic to have appointed someone of Michal’s calibre to New Zealand’s number one lifestyle title. She has broad experience in every aspect of marketing, media and publishing and brings commercial savvy and international flair to this key role. New Zealand House & Garden celebrated its 10th birthday this year and we believe this mature title now needs the invigoration and revitalisation to take it through its next decade.”

Michal describes this process as “an evolution rather than a revolution” and looks forward to the opportunities ahead. She says style magazines around the world are embracing a much richer feel with a move away from minimalism.

McKay says, “New Zealanders have wonderful houses and gardens for which they can be justifiably proud and they are very involved in entertaining. I hope I can lead them through these topics in new and refreshing ways as well as provide some unexpected delights along the way. I have been away for a long time but have always had a desire to return to my roots and be closer to my family. To have this along with the inspiration of two lifestyle magazines where I can indulge in my passions for interior design, food, beautiful architecture and gardens as well as travel and leisure, I regard as the apex in my career.”
