Forest Research appoints new Chief Executive

Rotorua-based, Crown Research Institute Forest Research has appointed Dr Tom Richardson as its new Chief Executive.

Dr Richardson will take up his role on 1 April 2005, replacing Bryce Heard who is completing his contract after 8 years with the company.

Forest Research Chairman, Brian Armstrong says he is very pleased that the company has appointed an internal candidate of exceptional calibre and experience into this critical position, against strong external competition.

An American by birth, Dr Richardson completed his PhD at Pennsylvania State University and joined Forest Research in 1992 as a scientist.

He has since become closely involved in the growth of biotechnology research in New Zealand and has a strong affinity with the demands of balancing research needs with commercial imperatives.

Dr Richardson is moving to this new level of responsibility from his current role as Chief Operating Officer for Science at Forest Research.

Mr Armstrong says that Forest Research has made significant changes during recent years and Dr Richardson’s appointment will provide continuity as the organisation strengthens new alliances.

“The Board is confident that Dr Richardson will continue a long history of innovative leadership at Forest Research and we look forward to working with him as the organisation builds value for New Zealand’s knowledge economy.”

Mr Armstrong thanks and congratulates Bryce Heard on his strong leadership in both the science and forestry sectors through what have been demanding years of change.

“We recognise his significant contribution to shifting the direction of Forest Research and building a solid foundation for our journey into a Biomaterials Future.

Bryce’s practical background has enabled the company to develop strong new linkages between forestry and the consumer sectors at a time when science has been brought squarely into the commercial world.”
