Open Day at Arapuni Power Station

Media Release
15 March 2005

Open Day at Arapuni Power Station

Mighty River Power is offering Waikato people the chance to view and tour the Arapuni Power Station, the oldest operating power station on the Waikato River at an open day this weekend.

The Arapuni power station will be open on Saturday, March 19th 2005 from 10am to 3pm.

Completed in 1929, the dam and powerhouse are protected under the Historic Places Trust. A feature of the bush-lined gorge below the powerhouse is the historic suspended footbridge, a popular destination for tourists and sightseers.

Guided tours of the station are available as part of the Festival of the Environment 2005, a week-long festival celebrating the connection between the environment and people of the Waikato region and neighbouring districts. The Open Day is also part of the Putaruru Water Festival.

The Arapuni Dam is located in Arapuni Village on the road that links State Highway 3 at Kihikihi with State Highway 1 at Putaruru.
