Francis Small steps down from Meridian Energy chair

The chairman of Meridian Energy, Francis Small, has announced that he is to resign from his role at the state-owned electricity generator and retailer.

Dr Small says he has taken the decision in the light of personal interests and commitments.

He says the nearly seven years he has spent as Meridian chair have been a time of considerable change and challenge in the electricity sector.

Meridian Chief Executive Keith Turner says Dr Small has made an enormous contribution to the establishment of a new and different electricity company.

“In the time of Francis’ chairmanship we have doubled in size, from a two billion-dollar company to a four billion-dollar company. That in itself speaks volumes about his leadership,” Dr Turner said.

State-owned enterprises minister Paul Swain also paid tribute to Dr Small’s role in leading the country’s largest SOE through a challenging phase of establishment into a period of sustained growth.

Dr Small’s resignation will take effect on June 30. An announcement on his successor as chairman is expected shortly.
