MEDIA RELEASE

Sunday, 22 May 2005

Families Commissioner, Health Experts Join Food Advertising Review

The Advertising Standards Authority today announced the membership of the Review Panel to consider submissions on the ASA Code for Advertising to Children and the ASA Code for Advertising of Food. The Review is occurring as a result of commitments made by the media and advertising industries under the Food Industry Accord.

The Review Panel will be a combination of public and industry members.

The public members are:

Dr Rajen Prasad - Chief Commissioner, Families Commission
Cynthia Maling - Public Health Directorate, Ministry of Health
Dr Lynne Lane - Public Health Specialist
Bindy Barclay - Media Research Centre, New Zealand Broadcasting School

Hilary Souter, Executive Director of the ASA, said “the ASA is very pleased that these individuals, all with a significant amount of expertise, have agreed to be a part of the Panel reviewing the codes on advertising to children and advertising food”.

The other members of the panel are:

Richard Prosser - General Manager, Television Commercial Approvals Bureau
Jill Desborough - Former Liquor Advertising Pre-Vetting Adjudicator
Mark Champion - Chief Executive, Communication Agencies Association
Jeremy Irwin - Executive Director, Association of New Zealand Advertisers

The Panel will be chaired by David Innes, immediate past president of the Advertising Standards Authority. The former Executive Director of the ASA, Glen Wiggs is Secretary to the Panel.

The first meeting of the Panel will be on June 2 and a further round of consultation with interested parties is likely, prior to finalising any recommendations.

Ms Souter said that 25 submissions had been received from a range of groups and individuals commenting on the current codes. The panel is expected to report its findings to the Advertising Standards Authority in August.
