Entries open for top apprentice competition
Carpentry apprentices nationwide are being urged to put themselves forward for the inaugural Registered Master Builders Carters 2005 Apprentice of the Year competition, promoting the building and construction sector as a great place to train and work.
The competition which aims to foster and encourage the training and development of apprentices, will be run in the Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Wellington and Canterbury regions this year.
Registered Master Builders CEO Chris Preston said that the expansion to four other regions this year was due to the success of the Wellington region competition in 2004.
“We’re looking forward to the competition this year and the opportunity for apprentices throughout New Zealand to get the opportunity to participate. We’ve been overwhelmed by the interest so far and the enthusiasm from apprentices themselves, employers and training institutions.”
Principal sponsor Carters’ Marketing Manager, Katrina Osborn, agrees. “We’re keen to be involved in an event which encourages young apprentices and promotes the carpentry industry as a great career option.”
Apprentices are asked to complete an entry form and submit it to their local Registered Master Builders Association. Up to ten apprentices from each of the five regions will be chosen to progress to the final stages of the awards.
Judging panels will be looking at personal attributes, practical skills, knowledge of the building sector and materials, and endorsement from the apprentice’s employer or educational institution. The competition is open to all carpentry apprentices, aged 25 or younger as at the time of close of entries, irrespective of whom they work for or train with. Regional winners will be announced in October.
The Registered Master Builders Carters 2005 Apprentice of the Year is supported by principal sponsor Carters; and supporting sponsor the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO).
