Fairfax NZ Hires Pacific Correspondent

AUCKLAND (Fairfax/Pacific Media Watch): Experienced international news agency correspondent Michael Field has been appointed to head a news bureau for Fairfax New Zealand in Auckland.

Field, who was the New Zealand-based correspondent for Agence France-Presse from 1989-2004, will take up his new role on August 1.

He will join an Auckland office from which Fairfax Business Day and DominionPost editorial and photographic staff currently operate in Auckland.

An internationally respected commentator and writer on Pacific Affairs, Field has published several books, the latest on the 2000 Fiji coup, Speight of Violence; Inside Fiji's Coup.

He will continue to cover the Pacific beat for Fairfax NZ publications.

Field was bureau chief of the Dominion's Auckland bureau from 1987-89. He previously worked for the Sunday News and the former Evening Post and began news agency journalism with the New Zealand Press Association in the mid 1970s.

"We are delighted to have Michael on board. He has forged a reputation as a highly respected international news agency journalist and brings a wealth of experience to our Auckland operation," said Fairfax NZ group editor John Crowley.

"Michael will cover all aspects of news and help us to continue to build on an Auckland presence from which all Fairfax papers will benefit.

"His robust reporting of Pacific affairs will feature across all of our mastheads," Crowley said.
