CCTV cameras in Newmarket get green light

Newmarket will soon have CCTV cameras monitoring its streets 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Newmarket Business Association has decided to put up $142,000, including $30,000 from the Hobson Community Board, to purchase and install eight wireless cameras.

"Local businesspeople told us they wanted CCTV cameras and so in two months we'll have eight up and running. We'll aim to raise some funds for another eight cameras down the track," said Cameron Brewer, General Manager of the Newmarket Business Association.

"The police are enthusiastic and will work with us to determine where the cameras will be located. They like the fact that the cameras can be moved around and will be monitored 24 hours a day."

The cameras will be installed and monitored by Darien Rush Security. Based in central Newmarket, the security firm already has staff manning a high tech control and monitoring room around the clock. Darien Rush Security will partner with Newmarket Security which has security guards on Newmarket's streets 24/7.

"These wireless IP surveillance cameras represent the best technology currently available in the marketplace. The quality of the footage, even at night, is quite staggering," said Darien Rush.

Mr Brewer believes Newmarket's security camera network will be a huge deterrent to anti-social behaviour and illegal activity. All footage will be recorded.

"Every day in the news we read about how useful CCTV cameras are in helping the police identify and apprehend criminals. We also know that our cameras will lead to a reduction in graffiti vandalism."

Mr Brewer said with Auckland's town centres becoming more competitive Newmarket needs to work harder than ever to keep in front.

"We have got a reputation as the premier retail destination in New Zealand to protect. No bogan's going to stand in our way," he said.
