Timber treatment report should give confidence

NEWS RELEASE

From Building Industry Federation

Timber treatment report should give confidence

The Building Industry Federation (BIF) today welcomed the report of the Department of Building and Housing on the timber treatment product TimberSaver Boron as one that should give confidence to builders and customers.

Mr John Pfahlert, Executive Director of BIF, said the key elements of the report were:

- That the correct certification procedures for the product were followed

- The department has confidence in the product to perform to an acceptable standard if used in the manner for which it is intended.

“The field sampling to be carried out by BRANZ to determine whether there is any evidence of product failure in completed structures is a useful next step in completing the investigatory process. Tests under real life conditions should provide further assurance the product does the job it was intended to do.

“BIF will work with its members to ensure that builders are well aware of the conditions of use and products available for treating cuts, holes and notches.

“The process to gain Codemark Accreditation for this product was rigorous. It was backed by a three and a half year study by the Forest Research Institute and subject to independent evaluation.

“It is essential that both the product and the certification system hold up in the face of critical scrutiny when doubts are raised. Results of the inquiry to date provide necessary reassurance on these points.”
