NZPA Appoints Chief Photographer

Well-known news photographer Ross Setford has been appointed Chief Photographer by the New Zealand Press Association as a further addition to the agency’s range of services.

Mr Setford has had key roles in news and sports photojournalism in New Zealand and Australia since beginning his career with the Hawera Star. He was one of the founders of the independent photo-news agency Fotopress and also illustrations editor of The Dominion newspaper.

“We are delighted to start our new photographic service with the appointment of such a talented and experienced photo-journalist,” said NZPA Editor Nick Brown.

The decision was made earlier this year to radically change NZPA’s 125-year-old model whereby member newspapers shared their text copy through NZPA.

Chief Executive Lincoln Gould said the establishment of the NZPA photo service was just one of a number of changes under way at the national news agency.

“Beginning in October, the 125 year old copy sharing arrangement will begin to be phased out and by the end of the year NZPA’s editorial staff will be responsible for writing the entire national news wire which will be available to all media. Providing our own photographs to illustrate stories adds an important extra quality to our service, ” said Mr Gould.

Graphic and page ready services have already been started and it is planned that the new NZPA photo-wire will eventually extend throughout the country.
