Volumes Index Update – August 2005
August was a strong month for Ports of Auckland with total container volumes* up 5% on August 2004 and full import and full export container volumes up 10% and 5% respectively due to recent gains in market share.
Total container volumes* for the 12 months to end-August 2005 (as compared with the 12 months to end-August 2004) were down 4% to 642,753 TEUs and full import and full export container volumes were up 2% and unchanged respectively.
The lower total container volumes for the year are due to fewer empty and transhipment containers, and the loss of one shipping service in February 2004. The loss of that service represented 8% of total volume at the time. The three new shipping services gained in recent months are now adding over 35,000 TEUs a year to Auckland’s volume.
Containers comprise approximately 70% of Ports of Auckland’s throughput and about 85% of business activity.
Breakbulk (non-containerised) volumes for August 2005 were up 18% on August 2004 and were up 7% to 5.0 million tonnes for the 12 months to end-August 2005.
Volumes Index Update – July 2005
Total container volumes were down 7% for July 2005 compared with July 2004. Full import container volumes were down 2% and full export container volumes were up 1%.
Breakbulk (non-containerised) volumes for July 2005 were up 14% on July 2004.
* Container volumes are measured in TEUs (20-foot equivalent units – or the size of a standard 20-foot container).
