NZIF Appoints Independent Member for Registration Board

The New Zealand Institute of Forestry Inc (NZIF) today announced the appointment of Dr Alex Sutherland to its Registration Board, filling the position created by the resignation of Bill Cleghorn (NZIF Honorary Member) after 17 years of service.

Dr Sutherland is a Commissioner in the Environment Court, a Distinguished Fellow of the Institution of Professional Engineers (IPENZ), a former Dean of Canterbury University’s School of Engineering, a Member of the School of Forestry’s Advisory Committee, a Member of the IPENZ Council (1985-1990 and 1992-1998), a Member of the University of Auckland’s BE accreditation panels in 1985 and 1986, a Member of the National Qualification Authority’s Academic Qualifications Standing Committee (1990-91) and has been chair or a member of numerous RMA hearing panels.

In announcing the appointment, NZIF President Jaquetta (Ket) Bradshaw congratulated Dr Sutherland, noting he would bring an impressive array of qualifications and experience to the Registration Board.

“Of particular relevance to the work of the NZIF Registration Board is Dr Sutherland’s experience with governance, accreditation and education.”

The NZIF Registration Board is responsible for maintaining the standards and professionalism of Registered Forestry Consultants and Registered Members within the Institute’s 789 membership throughout New Zealand.

“This ensures that when you engage a Registered Forestry Consultant you know that they have attained standards of expertise and professionalism required by their professional body, and that they are required to abide by those standards and the Institute’s Code of Ethics,” said Ms Bradshaw.
