Maori Television Broadcasts Maori Sports Awards
The home of Maori sport is the official broadcaster of this year’s REGIONAL MAORI SPORTS AWARDS as well as the NATIONAL MAORI SPORTS AWARDS ceremony.
Maori Television will screen five regional awards events: Te Arawa (Saturday October 29 at 8.00 PM); Te Tai Tokerau (Saturday November 5 at 8.00 PM); Turanganui-a-Kiwa (Saturday November 12 at 8.00 PM); Mataatua (Saturday November 19 at 8.00 PM); and Kahungunu (Saturday November 26, at 8.00 PM).
The regional awards are held by iwi groups throughout the country to foster, promote and encourage Maori sportspeople at a grassroots level in the pursuit of excellence in their chosen fields and to honour the outstanding sporting achievements attained by Maori.
Maori Television is also the host broadcaster of the NATIONAL MAORI SPORTS AWARDS which will screen on Sunday December 18 at 6.00 PM.
The national awards organiser – Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa Charitable Trust – has changed the date for the annual ceremony to Saturday December 17 at the request of USA Open champion Michael Campbell (Ngati Ruanui).
Maori Television executive producer of sport Bailey Mackey says the channel is proud to be the official broadcaster of both the regional and national awards’ ceremonies which demonstrates its commitment to grass-roots Maori sports events.
“At the beginning of the year, our mission was to make Maori Television the home of Maori sport,” Bailey Mackey says.
“Now, with our weekly sports show CODE, live broadcasts of international sporting fixtures such as Maori rugby and rugby league, the work of the sports team on the news programme, Te Kaea, not to mention the many sports shows we commission, more Maori sport is being delivered into the homes of New Zealanders than ever before – that’s extremely positive for Maori Television and for Maori.
”We are pleased to support Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa and look forward to our ongoing partnership to recognise and promote national achievement in Maori sport.”
