September update

September was a very strong month for Ports of Auckland with total container volumes* up 32% on September 2004. Full import and full export container volumes were up 23% and 35% respectively.

The increase in total container volumes for the month remains high at 21% when the 4,000 TEUs lost during the four-day strike which occurred in September 2004 are taken into account.

Total container volumes* for the 12 months to end-September 2005 (as compared with the 12 months to end-September 2004) were unchanged (656,780 TEUs) and full import and full export container volumes were up 4% and 3% respectively.
Containers comprise approximately 70% of Ports of Auckland’s throughput and about 85% of business activity.

Breakbulk (non-containerised) volumes were up 5% to 5.0 million tonnes for the 12 months to end-September 2005 and down 2% for the month of September.

First quarter volumes

For the first quarter (July to September 2005), total container volumes were up 8% to 173,840 TEUs as compared to the first quarter in 2004 (161,366 TEUs).

Full import and full export container volumes were up 10% and 12% respectively. Breakbulk volumes were up 10%.

* Container volumes are measured in TEUs (20-foot equivalent units – or the size of a standard 20-foot container).
