Awards
Top Maori sports achievers from Te Tai Tokerau will be showcased in a special MAORI REGIONAL SPORTS AWARDS 2005 broadcast on Maori Television (Saturday November 5 at 8.00 PM).
Presented by Pio Terei, Veeshayne Armstrong and Maori Television’s own Tumehe Rongonui, the 2005 Te Tai Tokerau Maori Sports Awards is being hosted by He Oranga Poutama Sport Northland in Whangarei this Saturday, October 29.
For the fourth year in a row, He Oranga Poutama Sport Northland is recognising the pursuit of excellence by Maori sportspeople from Te Tai Tokerau.
Categories include junior and open sportsman and sportswoman, sportsperson with a disability, outstanding team and marae, referee, administrator and coach of the year, community service and service to sport awards as well as the supreme award – Maori Sportsperson of the Year.
Doreen Rihari – Lower North Kaiwhakahaere (organiser) for Sport Northland – says the active lifestyles programme aims to empower Maori in Te Tai Tokerau to be active for life through sport and physical activity and continues its strong commitment to reward their success and contribution in the sporting arena.
All finalists and winners are forwarded to Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa for the national Maori Sports Awards to be held in December.
“Our event is one that celebrates the outstanding efforts and successes of our Maori sportspeople and salutes their contribution to the sporting community of Tai Tokerau and to Aotearoa,” Doreen Rihari says.
