FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Super 12 Kapa Haka Showcases Bay of Plenty Team

A Bay of Plenty group features in a spectacular showcase of Maori performing arts – SUPER 12 KAPA HAKA – screening on Maori Television (Tues Nov 1 at 5.15 PM).

Te Roopu Manaia from Te Arawa – led by Hiria Vaka and Dan Vaka – feature in the Maori language entertainment extravaganza filmed late last year.

The Turanganui-a-Kiwa Kapa Haka Super 12 Festival in Gisborne is an annual competition hosted by Kapa Haka International in December to provide opportunities for creativity and the development of Maori culture into new spaces.

Twelve teams – each with 12 members – must perform all disciplines of kapa haka within 12 minutes. Participants are encouraged to be as innovative as possible while enhancing the traditional aspects of kapa haka.

Every week, a 15-minute episode of SUPER 12 KAPA HAKA focuses on one kapa haka group.

Upcoming episodes will feature Pounamu from Tamaki-makau-rau (Tues Nov 8); Tu Te Ihi from Tainui (Tues Nov 15); Te Here a Maui from Tairawhiti (Tues Nov 22); Te Wero from Te Arawa (Tues Nov 29); Te Whatu Huarewa from Te Arawa (Tues Dec 6); Mai Hawaiki from Te Arawa (Tues Dec 13); Turanga Ararau from Tairawhiti (Tues Dec 20); and Taiwere from Te Arawa (Tues Dec 27).

Catch contemporary Maori performing arts on Maori Television’s SUPER 12 KAPA HAKA every Tuesday at 5.15 PM.
