Radio Station Irresponsible Says NZSOA Press Release
The New Zealand Security Officers Association has slammed a ZM Radio Station promotion, calling it irresponsible and inconsiderate to residents.
The Lion Red-ZM Radio promotion has offered to pay up to $250 in noise control fines for any listeners who get into trouble with noise control officers to "keep the party going this summer" and stop "party poopers who come and take your stereo away and slap you with a dirty fine".
A spokesperson for the New Zealand Security Officers Association said today, “ Such a move by a city radio station can only be seen as irresponsible and inconsiderate to residents. Noise control officer are often subjected to violence and threats of violence when all they are trying to is bring relief to those affected by careless and inconsiderate people.”
“Noisy parties are often boozy parties that can easily end in tears. The radio station that dreamed up this promotion should stand back and think through the likely consequences of their actions.”
Christchurch Council officials have warned in a press release that the promotion could be seen as inciting people to commit an offence, and those considering holding noisy parties because of the competition should think again.
Council Environmental Effects Team Leader, Klaus Prusas said the $250 offered might not cover all costs or provide any guarantee that the Council would return any confiscated noise-producing equipment.
He said, "The cost of breaching noise restrictions varies, depending on the circumstances. Some have been over $1000, and that doesn't include infringement fees that can also be levied at $500, which is additional to the cost of confiscation of equipment."
