Singapore Air Gets Rare Orchids to Flower Show

15 November 2005

Singapore Airlines Delivers Rare Orchids Safe to the Ellerslie Flower Show

Plus Ellerslie Flower Show visitors have a chance to win tickets to see the Singapore Orchid at home,
with Singapore Airlines and Singapore Tourism Board.

Singapore Airlines can now add exotic orchids to its list of precious cargo.

Three separate shipments will touch down on New Zealand soil this week in a special consignment set to wow Ellerslie Flower Show audiences.

A world expert on rare scented Singapore orchids will accompany these delicate flowers on their journey to New Zealand.

The 64sqm of exotic orchids will be part of the exhibit created by award-winning designer Murray Lye in Ellerslie Flower Show’s Floral Art Marquee.

The orchids will take centre stage on the Show’s opening day, Wednesday November 16, as international orchid expert J B Tay delivers a series of presentations to visitors.

Singapore Airlines - a sponsor of Ellerslie Flower Show – also offers Ellerslie Flower Show visitors a chance to win the holiday of a lifetime, along with Singapore Tourism Board.

The fantastic prize will be a journey of exploration through the culture and exotic gardens of Singapore. The competition winners will visit Singapore Botanic Gardens, wander the beautiful National Orchid Garden, browse the shopping paradise of Orchard Road, take a trip to Sentosa Island, enjoy a night safari at Singapore Zoo and relax with a Singapore Sling at the legendary Raffles Hotel!

The fabulous package includes return air tickets for two flying Singapore Airlines, with four nights accommodation in Singapore. Travel insurance is supplied by Tower Insurance Ltd.

Entry forms for the prize are featured on all ticket wallets, and need to be dropped in the competition box at the Singapore Airlines display next to the Exotic Perfumed Orchids of Singapore display in the Twinings Floral Art Marquee at Ellerslie Flower Show.

With a population of around four million people, Singapore has been a centre for orchid hybridisation and culture since before World War II. This is due to a long collaboration between the Singapore Botanic Gardens and The Orchid Society of SE Asia (OSSEA), formerly the Malayan Orchid Society, which was founded in 1928.

Many of these hybrids are now rare, and are preserved in only a few sites in Singapore. But they represent a rich orchid heritage, and were important to the establishing of a cut flower export industry as well as a thriving amateur society of hobby growers.

The Twinings Floral Art marquee’s commitment to floral education will be made evident through many other international floral flavours, such as floral artist, Fumiko, director of the International Flower Academy in Japan.

The Ellerslie Flower Show 2005 promises to be Like Never Before, with innovation, inspiration and floral delights to warm even the coldest gardening heart! The Show will spring into bloom from 16-20 November. Tickets can be purchased at any Ticketek outlet, by contacting 09 307 5000 (or your local Ticketek number) or via the website www.ticketek.co.nz
