Tee In Young Designer Competition
Talented student Leila Rawnsley-Mason has won the Glassons Breast Cancer Research Trust (BCRT) Young Designer Competition with her T-shirt design now set to join a stellar line up in the 2006 Campaign.
In her final year of a Bachelor of Design at AUT majoring in fashion, Leila Rawnsley-Mason won over the judges with her design entitled ‘The Meaning Of Life’. Her inspiration for the design was quite simply the true importance of love when we come across life’s changing situations.
Touted as an emerging talent,
Rawnsley-Mason’s T-shirt will be sold through Glassons
outlets nationwide alongside designs from the ‘A-Team’
of New Zealand designers, Karen Walker, Trelise Cooper, Kate
Sylvester, Huffer, Nom*D and Zambesi.
“I am so excited”, says the twenty-one year old from Kawakawa Bay, Auckland. “ It’s crazy that my T-shirt was chosen as the top design and will be sold nationwide next to designs from some of the country’s leading names in fashion.”
Says Leila “I had no idea that breast cancer affected so many women and I am pleased that my design will help contribute to such a worthy cause.”
The winning design, chosen from hundreds of high calibre entries from all over New Zealand, was judged by designers from the 2006 campaign.
The Glassons BCRT T-shirts, on sale in Glassons stores from 1 February 2006, retail for $29.95 and, as in previous years, $10 from the sale of each T-shirt goes towards the Breast Cancer Research Trust to help find a cure for breast cancer.
Each year, sales of the designer T-shirts raise well over half a million dollars for research into breast cancer in New Zealand. Breast cancer affects one in every ten women in New Zealand and one in every 30 women will have the disease before they reach thirty-five years of age.
“Our hope is that both the competition and Leila’s design will help to raise awareness and change perceptions among younger women that breast cancer is a disease that can affect all women regardless of age,” says Mimi Lloyd, Chairperson of The Breast Cancer Research Trust. “Glassons and BCRT are absolutely thrilled for Leila. To have her T-shirt creation worn by hundreds of girls and women around New Zealand really is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
