Ports of Auckland Volumes Index Update

October was a good month for Ports of Auckland with total container volumes up 3% on October 2004. Full import and full export container volumes were up 5% and 1% respectively.

Total container volumes for the 12 months to end-October 2005 (as compared with the 12 months to end-October 2004) were unchanged (658,274 TEUs*) and full import and full export container volumes were up 5% and 3% respectively.

Containers comprise approximately 70% of Ports of Auckland's throughput and about 85% of business activity.

Breakbulk (non-containerised) volumes were up 4% to 5.0 million tonnes for the 12 months to end-October 2005 and down 16% for the month of October. Breakbulk volumes can swing significantly as a result of ships arriving just before or just after the month end.

* Container volumes are measured in TEUs (20-foot equivalent units - or the size of a standard 20-foot container).
