State Of The Nation Address Encouraging First Step

14 February 2006

Prime Minister’s State Of The Nation Address: “An Encouraging First Step … Let’s Ensure The Action Steps Quickly Follow.”

“The high priority given to supporting the economy and business-led growth is exactly the message businesses wanted to hear. The language is right and Government’s intentions are very clear and believable,” said Auckland Chamber of Commerce CEO, Michael Barnett.

Commenting on the Prime Minister’s State of the Nation Address to Parliament, Mr Barnett said that especially welcoming was the unambiguous commitment to New Zealand’s need to increase the number of globally competitive businesses, coupled with the acknowledgement that Government’s role is to provide a supportive environment, including infrastructure, regulations and business tax.

“The indication of an action-based Government-business partnership to help position New Zealand’s growth success is another encouraging sign,” said Mr Barnett.

The strong focus on fixing Auckland transport and energy infrastructure sends the strongest possible signal to Government’s key agencies to take the action steps required with urgency and no more delay.

“If Government is committed to the messages in this Address – and I believe it is – then there is every reason for business to be encouraged and confident that the supporting action steps will soon follow.”
