Motor Vehicle Sales Act review endorsed by MIA

Media Release
23 March 2006

Motor Vehicle Sales Act review endorsed by Motor Industry Association

The Motor Industry Association has come out in support of the proposed revisions to the Motor Vehicle Sales Act.

“This is a step in the right direction”, said Perry Kerr, CEO of the Motor Industry Association. “As an industry we’re more than happy to work with officials on the review of the Supplier Information Notice, and we believe that the suggested amendments to the re-registration process for traders will be of direct benefit to our members.”

While welcoming the proposed changes to the Act the Motor Industry Association, which represents new vehicle suppliers, advocates a complete freeing up of motor vehicle selling and considers motor vehicle traders should not be subjected to a specific piece of legislation, rather that motor vehicle selling falls under general consumer legislation.

“We know that there are dubious operators trading in motor vehicles, just like there are in other areas of business,” said Mr. Kerr. “As far as we’re concerned, the best protection that the car buying public has is to do business with dealers who have a new vehicle franchise – in addition to whatever protection that consumers have under the law, flying a new vehicle flag provides the public with the extra reassurance of the standards and ethics implicit in being a representative of the factory.”
