Torere rebuild given green light

Council’s Community Development Committee last night resolved to progress with the rebuilding of Te Whare o Torere (House of Learning) at the Emilia Maud Nixon Garden of Memories in Howick, which was severely damaged by fire in October 2004.

The decision follows resolutions made by Council in August 2005 where Councillors moved that external funding be secured to pay for the rebuild, in particular for the replacement of carvings and tukutuku panels. Progress was to be reported back to the Community Development Committee along with a tree protection plan.

The Committee agreed to a revised funding proposal which comprises $166,000 from insurance, $302,000 in reprioritised funds from Council’s 2005/2006 Property and Assets programme plus $170,000 secured from the ASB Trust for the cultural artworks.

Cr John Walker, Chair of the Community Development Committee says:

“The Committee was satisfied with the level of external funding secured. Councillors are very pleased that major savings have been made on the project and that the rebuild can now go ahead.”
