Hunt for Queen look-a-like intrigues
British media
A search to crown the most convincing Queen look-a-like in the Queen's City has gained the attention of some bemused British media.
Today contest organisers, the Newmarket Business Association, have been interviewed by British newspaper and radio media, intrigued by New Zealand's truly inventive way of celebrating the Monarch's 80th birthday.
"We've been blown away by the level of interest, both locally and internationally. The internet works in amazing ways. It seems one can't organise anything without the mother country finding out,” said organiser Cameron Brewer of the Newmarket Business Association.
“We've also been delighted by the local women who have phoned us wanting to know more about the contest. There seems to be a lot of affection for our octogenarian Head of State and intriguingly there are quite a few women out there who are convinced they resemble her.”
Women who bare a resemblance to the Monarch are being encouraged to gather outside Smith and Caughey's on Broadway Newmarket at 3pm on Saturday 22 April. The grand prize for the most convincing Queen will be $500 worth of Newmarket shopping vouchers. There will also be runner-up prizes.
"We're calling on women of all ages to enter this contest. The winner might be someone who looks like a young Princess Elizabeth, the Queen in the 1970s, or one who bears a more modern-day resemblance.
"We've bought the tiara and we've got three judges organised. We're now waiting with much anticipation to crown Auckland's most convincing Queen look-a-like," said Mr Brewer.
