South Island Beekeepers Will Fight Varroa Incursion

“The detection of the Varroa bee mite in the South Island is disappointing, but not unexpected” says Jane Lorimer, President of the National Beekeepers Association.

“Fortunately the lessons learned by the North Island beekeepers over the last five years will help their South Island counterparts” she says.

“Already, the management of the outbreak is underway with good communication between Biosecurity New Zealand, The Varroa Agency Inc. and the industry members.” President Lorimer says that “we expect to remain in close communication during the weeks ahead”.

“We have arranged for affected beekeepers to be contacted and support given during what we know will be a very difficult time. The North Island beekeepers experience and that of other instances when a new disease is found have made it clear that the affected beekeepers are seriously concerned for the wellbeing of their bees, their businesses and their families” said Jane Lorimer.

“Through all of this, the National Beekeepers Association will help beekeepers to focus on survival strategies for the future success of their businesses”, she said. “There will be significant discussion on the future of beekeeping at out annual conference in Hamilton in July.”
