New Territory Turbo - Luxury at Half the Price
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ford's New Territory Turbo - Luxury at Half the Price
Ford New Zealand's new Territory XR Turbo and Territory Ghia Turbo will offer enhanced performance and increased luxury – at close to half the price of similarly styled and appointed European products.
"The Territory turbo range of vehicles continues the innovation and groundbreaking development associated with the original Territory program," said Ford New Zealand Managing Director, Mr Richard Matheson.
"The two new turbo models successfully combine Territory's popular functionality and versatility with more sophisticated styling and increased performance.
"From the distinctive bonnet scoop to the twin exhaust pipes, the styling is subtle, but purposeful."
"The XR nomenclature is unique to the New Zealand market. Our customers have told us that the high performance capabilities and sporty styling of the vehicle are a natural extension to the XR family of vehicles."
In addition to engineering, mechanical and visual modifications to the exterior of the vehicle, Territory XR Turbo and Territory Ghia Turbo also contain a wealth of interior enhancements offering the sophistication and high degree of interior appointment usually expected of a luxury SUV.
"Both turbo vehicles are significantly differentiated from the rest of the Territory range," said Mr Matheson.
"In particular, our customers will be under no illusion that they are travelling in the luxury sports flagship of the Ford SUV range when they ride in the Territory Ghia Turbo."
The 245kW six speed AWD Territory XR Turbo debuts with a price of $63,490, and the more highly specified Territory Ghia Turbo with a recommended retail price of $72,490.
"Competitive pricing has been a feature of the Territory range since we launched in June 2004. The price points for the two new turbo variants will appeal to customers looking for the flexibility inherent in the Territory range along with increased performance and luxury, at a reasonable price."

SAFETY LEVELS MATCH THE
LUXURY
Ford New Zealand's new turbo Territory range will benefit from all the safety and functionality developments introduced across the top-selling SUV range since the original Territory was launched in 2004.
"Territory was the first Australian manufactured vehicle to incorporate the advanced safety features of Dynamic Stability Control and also the first to include side curtain airbags," said Russell Christophers, Vehicle Line Director Falcon and Territory, Ford Australia.
"More recently, it set another benchmark in customer convenience and ease of driving with the introduction of a reverse camera on some SY variants. This feature is standard on Territory Ghia Turbo."
The image from the rear of the vehicle is displayed on the colour Interior Command Centre screen immediately when reverse gear is selected.
The camera covers a wide field of view of the area behind the car and is mounted in a position that provides the driver with a clear view of the area behind Territory, including the ground directly below the bumper, to a distance of about 15 metres. The wide angle of the camera – measuring about 130 degrees – means the area immediately outside the width of Territory can also be seen.
The reverse camera also proves to be an
invaluable aid when backing up to hitch a trailer or
caravan.
One of the cornerstones of the Territory safety story is Ford's patented Intelligent Safety System. The ISS is the brains behind the operation of the crash sensors which monitor and control all accident related events that the vehicle may encounter.
ISS features integrated seat belt buckle pretensioners, energy management retractors, driver's seat belt usage sensor, driver's seat position sensor, dual stage inflating front airbags and crash severity sensor. Inflatable side curtain airbags are also standard on Territory Ghia Turbo and an option for the Territory XR Turbo.
The ISS is a fully integrated, computer-driven system that 'thinks' about, and responds to, different accident conditions. Sensors constantly feed data to the vehicle's Advanced Restraints Module (ARM) – the 'brain' of the system.
"The module takes into account the seating position of the driver, whether the front driver and passenger seat belts are engaged and the severity of the accident before deploying appropriate safety technologies during frontal collisions," said Mr Christophers.
The ARM controls the variable front airbag inflator output and pyrotechnic front seat belt pretensioners according to the severity of a frontal crash.
It also controls the deployment of the inflatable side curtain airbags and tells the Body Electronics Module (BEM) to unlock the doors in the event of a crash.
"In essence, the system determines the severity of the crash and deploys the airbags accordingly.
"Territory also features the acclaimed beltminder system, which provides an intermittent visible and audible warning if the driver's seat belt is not fastened with the vehicle in motion."
All seatbelts in Territory are three-point lap-sash, for enhanced safety in the front, second or third row seats.
Territory also includes an anti-intrusion brake pedal that decouples from the brake booster shaft in a frontal crash.
"Territory is the SUV of choice for more New Zealanders than any other similar model," said Mr Christophers.
"Part of this appeal is Territory's undeniable functionality and versatility, but these attributes need to be balanced by accompanying safety standards.
"Safety is a major cornerstone of the Territory range, and an attribute that we pride ourselves on. With its combination of excellent safety structure, collapsible brake pedal and steering column, side curtain airbags* and active safety features such as Dynamic Stability Control, the new turbo Territory models look to build on what is already a firm family favourite."

TURBO TERRITORY ADDS SPORTS TO THE SUBSTANCE
A range of exterior design cues help make
the new turbo Territory the sportiest SUV in the Ford
world.
A bonnet scoop, dual exhaust outlets and unique five spoke alloys all play their role in differentiating the turbocharged variant of New Zealand's best-selling SUV, and an exciting range of new metallic paint options add further colour choices to the Territory range.
"Turbo Territory is a progression of the journey we started with the original Territory, which traces back to 1999. This new model is a further development of this innovative model along the design continuum," said Territory Exterior Design Manager, Graham Wadsworth of Ford Australia.
"Increased power, improved performance and a luxurious interior are hallmarks of the exciting new sports luxury SUV, and we have complemented these attributes with an equally fitting exterior package."
Before a single exterior change was signed off however, turbo Territory was subjected to extensive market research.
"We incorporated the feedback from market research into the overall design of the vehicle. Key considerations from customers included the size of the bonnet scoop, and the degree of differentiation between the turbo and non-turbo variant," said Mr Wadsworth.
"Overwhelmingly, customers told us they wanted a bonnet scoop that provided function over form. With this in mind, we were able to design a scoop of appropriate size, which met with research approval and also provides a real sense of power and sporty sophistication.
"The scoop is one of the first things that people notice about the new model, so it was imperative to get its design correct."
To emphasise the refined and sophisticated appearance of turbo Territory, the colour palette has been extended to 10 with three striking new metallic paints – Seduce (red), Neo (blue) and Ego (charcoal) Neo is not available on other Territory models.
"These new colours are representative of the elegance associated with the new vehicle, and are created with executive appeal in mind," said Mr Wadsworth.
Additional styling cues which differentiate the turbo variant include dual exhaust outlets and 'Turbo' nomenclature. An 'XR Turbo' badge adorns the rear of the Territory XR Turbo, while a 'Ghia Turbo' badge is found on the back of the higher specification model.
A unique diamond mesh front grille further differentiates the turbo model and also allows for improved cooling of the engine compartment. The Territory XR Turbo features a black rear spoiler to help differ it from the Territory Ghia Turbo
Unique new 18" alloy wheels enhance the stance and proportions of the vehicle, and a silver skid plate at the front and rear of the Territory Ghia Turbo provides an additional point of difference over the Territory XR Turbo model.
"Territory XR Turbo and Territory Ghia Turbo offer luxury SUV styling with a sporting edge; designed with elegance in mind, coupled with subtle performance attributes.
"We've developed what we consider to be the sportiest SUV available anywhere in the Ford world," Mr Wadsworth said.

ELEGANT INTERIOR COMPLEMENTS APPEARANCE OF LUXURIOUS NEW TURBO TERRITORY
A
sophisticated shade of charcoal, a colour which infers style
and luxury, is used extensively throughout the interior of
the new sports luxury turbo Territory range.
"Our research helped determine that darker colours create an interior which is both alluring and exciting, exactly the attributes we wanted to convey in the new turbo models," said Territory Colour and Trim Design Manager, Ms Debbie Pascoe of Ford Australia.
"It also creates a real impact when someone gets into the vehicle – the interior is quite different from anything currently available in the Ford range and thus delivers a unique sense of elegance and prestige."
The interior of the Territory XR Turbo features a warm charcoal environment with eucalyptus contrast, which flows through to the black suede style seat trim. A sophisticated metallic-effect weave fabric also features on the Territory XR Turbo seats.
A four-way power driver seat is standard on the Territory XR Turbo.
The higher specification Territory Ghia Turbo features a similar warm charcoal interior, but with a warm charcoal leather seat trim featuring silver stitching and a six-way power driver seat with memory function.
Both models feature command driving position seats which offer improved lateral support thanks to larger bolsters, and new front seat head restraints that contribute to the sporty appearance.
Territory XR Turbo is fitted with a leather sports steering wheel, while a luxury sports steering wheel and leather wrapped park brake are fitted to the Territory Ghia Turbo. A leather insert gear lever is standard on both models.
"The Interior Command Centre (ICC) of the new Territory Ghia Turbo is finished in black onyx with satin chrome highlights, and is a real statement in style," said Ms Pascoe.
"It is sleek and sophisticated and creates a further sense of luxury and prestige."
The Territory Ghia Turbo ICC unit includes a premium audio system with 6-disc in-dash CD player, colour screen and dual zone climate control.
The instrument clusters are also unique to the turbo Territory range, with a distinguishable variation in illumination, colour and finish between the two models.
"Territory XR Turbo features blue illumination representing a luxury sports image, and the white backlighting found in the Territory Ghia Turbo creates an even greater sense of prestige," added Ms Pascoe.
In keeping with the virtues established by the original Territory, the new turbo models continue to provide an exceptionally innovative interior.
Each turbo model boasts more than 30 storage units including a lockable compartment under the driver's seat and a removable and dishwasher safe rubbish bin.
Territory's 60/40 split fold down second row seat further extends its versatile load carrying ability.
Both vehicles offer flexible seating arrangements, including the renowned Territory attribute of being able to transport as many as seven people when fitted with the third row seats, which are standard on the Territory Ghia Turbo, and optional on the Territory XR Turbo.
"The colours we have chosen create a strong assertive impression as well as a sense of understated elegance, befitting of a luxury SUV," said Ms Pascoe.
"The sophisticated dark interiors of the new vehicles complement the exterior styling and performance attributes of the turbo Territory range beautifully."

TERRITORY TURBO TURNS UP THE FUN FACTOR
Territory XR Turbo and Territory Ghia
Turbo will offer customers enhanced levels of performance
and driving enjoyment, while maintaining the car-like ride
and handling characteristics that are a hallmark of the
Territory range.
"Although customers told us they desired the power and torque benefits of Ford's renowned turbo engine, they did not want to lose any of the other qualities that come with driving a Territory," said Ford Australia Vice President of Product Development, Mr Trevor Worthington.
"The engineering team spent considerable time ensuring that the increased power and torque did not negatively affect the refinement or NVH levels of the vehicle.
"We also created a new Dynamic Stability Control calibration to cater for the variety of driving characteristics of a turbo Territory owner."
Engine
With 245kW of power and 480Nm of torque,
the turbo engine delivers a marked increase in operational
output, with 29% more power and 25% more torque than the
recently introduced SY Territory range.
"This translates into a better off-the-line performance feel and increased drivability, particularly when towing, due to the significantly increased level of torque," said Mr Worthington.
Turbo boost is a relatively low 45kPa
(6.5Psi), which develops a smooth and sophisticated delivery
of power.
"The turbo engine generates power effortlessly, arriving in an even, polished manner across a long flat torque curve. It provides the driver with a refined luxury sports experience with the performance they desire."
The position of the turbo Territory signature, the all important intercooler and associated bonnet scoop, played a major strategic role in the realisation of the final output figures.
Locating the intercooler on top of the engine was a functional decision rather than an outcome based purely on aesthetic qualities.
"Extensive pre-production testing determined an engine mounted, rather than a front mounted, intercooler would enable superior cooling of the charge air for the turbo Territory," said Mr Worthington.
"Better control of the air temperature into the engine leads to improvements in performance and fuel economy, which is a respectable 14.2l/100km."
An additional benefit of the top mounted intercooler is a reduction in the required amount of intercooler pipework. This in turn results in a reduction of the volume of air required to fill the induction system, leading to improved response to acceleration requests by the driver.
Vehicle
dynamics
An innovative dynamics package for the turbo
Territory range was developed in conjunction with the engine
program.
"Ford was the first local manufacturer to offer Dynamic Stability Control when we launched Territory in 2004, and we challenged ourselves to create an enhanced DSC system to integrate into the turbo Territory program to cater for all driving styles," said Mr Worthington.
"It is likely that Territory XR Turbo and Territory Ghia Turbo will attract customers with a range of driving requirements and styles – from family people mover through to recreational towing vehicle and, of course, the enthusiastic sports oriented driver.
"We have developed a DSC calibration that allows the sports enthusiast driver to enjoy the full benefits of the vehicle's additional performance, while also providing the right level of driver assistance for all drivers."
The calibration also needed to be applicable to city and highway driving, as well as all-wheel-drive excursions.
The DSC calibration was optimised to work in conjunction with the 245kW turbo engine, and the all-wheel-drive system with the 18" wheels and tyres.
The overall driving experience has been further enhanced by the ZF 6 speed automatic transmission first introduced with the SY Territory upgrade in 2005.
The two turbo Territory models feature a unique version of the ZF 6HP26 transmission which has been specially designed for the turbo all-wheel-drive application.
The transmission's internals and torque converter are common with the BF XR6 Turbo and FPV F6, while the transmission casing is common with the SY Territory AWD.
Gear ratios are common on all Territory variants, and the final drive ratio 3.46:2 is unchanged from SY Territory AWD models.
"This is the first time we've engineered the transmission to match both a turbo engine and an all-wheel-drive application," said Mr Worthington.
Territory XR Turbo and Ghia Turbo also feature upgraded front brakes, complete with a performance caliper and increased front rotor size (compared with SY Territory) up from 322mm x 28mm to 340mm x 32mm.
This package provides reliable and stable brake performance and improved pedal feel under all braking events.
Both the Territory XR Turbo and Territory Ghia Turbo are shod with new sports-bred 18" five spoke alloys and new P235/55 R18 tyres. The new tyre has been developed to deliver an optimum balance between grip and comfort.
"Turbo Territory customers will enjoy the high degree of sensible fun factor we have engineered into the vehicle.
"When asked to perform, it can cater to the enthusiast in each of us while still delivering sure-footed car-like ride and handling."
