Demand for electricity continues to hit new highs

New Zealand’s demand for electricity continues to hit new highs.

As System Operator, Transpower recorded a New Zealand peak demand of 6676 MW (megawatts) between 5.30 and 6pm last evening (27th June).

This surpassed the record demand seen just over a week ago, on the 19th June, of 6630 MW.

The North Island half hour peak demand last evening was also a new record, of 4441 MW.

And the South Island set a new record on Monday evening (26th June) between 5.30 and 6pm, of 2242 MW.

The total amount of electricity being used is also at record levels.

Transpower calculates that New Zealand’s total demand for electricity yesterday was 132.6 GWh (gigawatt hours). The previous 24-hour record was 131.3 GWh on the 17th August 2004.

The North Island set a 24-hour record yesterday of 85.6 GWh. The South Island’s new 24-hour record of 48.3 GWh was set last Thursday, the 22nd June.
