An insight into Isaan Province, Thailand
Intrepid offers an insight into Isaan Province, Thailand
Known for its idyllic islands in the south and the hilltribes of the north, Thailand has long been one of south east Asia’s premier travel destinations. There is however, more to Thailand than Bangkok, Ko Samui and Chiang Mai as Intrepid reveals on its new Isaan – the ancient land of Siam adventure, scheduled for November 2006.
Being in the north east corner of the country, far from the beach and and bordering Laos and Cambodia, the Isaan province is rarely on a traveller’s map. As a result it remains true to many ancient Thai traditions and customs that have been all but forgotten in other parts of the country.
Travellers to Isaan with Intrepid will experience Isaan culture with the locals, roam the forest trails of Khao Yi National Park in search of exotic birds and noisy gibbons and explore the pre-eminent Khmer sandstone sanctuary of Phimai. They will assist with bathing elephants during our Surin Elephant Village homestay, relax by the lake in Khon Kaen, discover the intriguing sculptures of 'Sala Kaew Ku' - a blend of Buddhist, Hindu and Confucian beliefs - and much more!
In Isaan English is rarely spoken and infrastructure is at its most basic. The province therefore offers a rare insight into the real Thailand and those that travel her path will enjoy an authentic cultural experience.
