Reed Publishing Wins Prestigious Award

On the cusp of its 100th birthday, Reed Publishing — New Zealand’s oldest publishing house — has been recognised for its outstanding achievement in the New Zealand book industry. The 2006 Thorpe-Bowker New Zealand Publishing Award was presented to Reed at last night’s Publishing Industry Awards Dinner in Auckland.

Organised by Booksellers New Zealand, the Publishing Industry Awards present an opportunity for industry peers to acknowledge those whose commitment, creativity and hard work set them apart from the rest.

New Zealand bookshops voted for Birkenhead-based Reed as this year’s winner of the New Zealand Publishing Award in recognition of the company’s excellent New Zealand list.

Preparing to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2007, Reed Publishing not only has a strong current New Zealand list but also a proud history supporting, nurturing and promoting New Zealand books. James Cowan’s 1934 work Tales of the Maori Bush, Barry Crump’s A Good Keen Man and Witi Ihimaera’s Whale Rider are just some of the titles Reed has lent its name to over the years. The centennial history of the company, authored by Gavin McLean, is due for release next year.

Of the company’s win, Publishing Manager Peter Dowling said it was testament to a great team effort and will help build a fantastic centenary celebration in 2007.

Reed also has two works, We Call It Home: A History of State Housing in New Zealand by Ben Schrader and New Zealand Birds In Focus by Geoff Moon, nominated for awards in this year’s Montana Awards. The 2006 Montana Awards are to be announced at a gala dinner tonight.
