Brit Banks on Better Lifestyle in NZ

“There are just about as many cars in the UK as there are sheep in New Zealand – give me sheep any day, New Zealand lamb tastes best!”

Auckland, 27 July 2006: Over 30 million cars, close-up views of neighbours’ bricks and long working days were three reasons one British man recently gave in an Opportunities New Zealand Expo questionnaire for wanting to leave the United Kingdom.

Opportunities New Zealand Expo, an event held in the UK twice a year, gives New Zealand employers the chance to court skilled British and expatriate workers.

Andy Garner and his family visited the London based job expo late last year, stopping at the Bank of New Zealand stand to enquire about employment. As a result he has moved his family to New Zealand and is now the manager of the BNZ Levin branch.

“I met many employers at the Expo and was offered several positions, with the top banking and financial institutions of New Zealand, however I feel very lucky to have secured the BNZ role.”

Andy says it was too much work and not enough play, overpopulation, the environment and millions of cars that convinced him to move to New Zealand.

“There are just about as many cars in the UK as there are sheep in New Zealand – give me sheep any day, New Zealand Lamb tastes best!”

“We used to live in Swindon and had a view of a brick house from every window. Now, we are surrounded by hills and have found our own piece of paradise in the Nikau Valley, Paraparaumu. We have a lake for the kids to play, fish and swim in, and the beach is only ten minutes away. The laid back attitude here is great. ‘No Worries’ – I love that saying!”

Hayley Roberts, Director of Opportunities New Zealand Expo, says the event is a one-stop-shop for anyone who is highly skilled and dedicated to moving for a better lifestyle in New Zealand.

“For only ten pounds you can meet real employers offering real jobs, get all the visa information that you need, rent or buy a house and even open a bank account,” says Roberts.

David Mahady, Talent Acquisition Manager for Bank of New Zealand says the Opportunities New Zealand Expo has been a great way for the Bank to connect with UK residents wanting to immigrate to New Zealand.

“We are always excited to meet with potential candidates to speak to them about careers at the Bank, and of course, we’re also here to assist UK migrants with their banking requirements. Last year, not only did we open an account for Andy Garner, we employed him! We are delighted that Andy is part of our Bank of New Zealand team,” says Mahady.

A survey taken from this year’s Expo in London shows the main reason visitors attended was for employment opportunities (92%) and the main reason for moving to New Zealand was the lifestyle (82%).
