Westfield's redeveloped Nuffield Street on button

Media release

Newmarket Business Association

17 August 2006

Westfield’s redeveloped Nuffield Street bang on the button

“Nuffield Street could have easily been buried by a $450 million mega-mall, but instead the country’s most sophisticated strip of boutiques has opened to universal applause,” said Cameron Brewer, head of the Newmarket Business Association.

Mr Brewer’s comments follow the opening of Newmarket’s redeveloped Nuffield Street today, which includes 29 boutiques with a distinct fashion flavour.

“This is an ideal community outcome and even Westfield’s most ardent critics acknowledge that. We have come a long from the mega-mall project that was proposed to an outraged community six years ago. Nuffield Street is of the right scale and its sophisticated tone underpins Newmarket’s premier aspirations.

“This is a real paradigm shift for Westfield. They’ve broken out of their big box thinking and the results stand proudly on their own.

“While Queen Street’s embroiled in a cheap and nasty debate about a tacky topless parade, and as Sylvia Park performs well below expectations, Newmarket continues to deliver a top product for the top end.”

“It’s an irony that the world’s biggest mall developer is going to achieve its highest acclaim in Auckland by refurbishing 60-year-old buildings along a side street. However it's an irony we’ve been more than happy to work with,” said Mr Brewer.
