Apply Now For ZESPRI Horticulture Scholarships Programme 2006/07

Applications are now open for the ZESPRI Horticulture Scholarships Programme 2006/07, for secondary school students who are passionate about pursuing a career in the dynamic horticultural industry.

ZESPRI is once again offering seven scholarships, valued at $3,000 each, to secondary school students who intend to study fulltime for a degree or
diploma in a horticulture-related subject at a New Zealand university or polytechnic next year.

The scholarships will be offered at the end of the 2006 year for study in 2007. Each scholarship is for one year only.

"The New Zealand kiwifruit industry has a rich past and a successful present. It also needs a strong and vibrant future," said ZESPRI Chief Executive, Tim Goodacre.

"Fostering and supporting the education of young people wishing to pursue a career in horticulture is one way ZESPRI can secure the legacy and help create a sustainable future for the kiwifruit industry.

"The industry needs more hard-working, dedicated and passionate young people to continue to grow, improve and innovate, and lead the industry forward in the future," he said.

"I encourage secondary students who are wishing to pursue a career in a horticultural field to apply for the ZESPRI Horticultural Scholarship. There are so many aspects of the horticultural industry on offer for young people and it is a rewarding, challenging and innovative path to follow."

Secondary schools in the main kiwifruit growing regions have been sent application forms and are reminded that applications must be received by 5pm October 10, 2006.

ZESPRI launched the scholarship programme in 2004 as part of the industry's centennial celebrations.

Application brochures have been sent to secondary school science and horticulture teachers, careers advisors, principals, school Board of Trustees, polytechnics and universities. Application brochures are also available at www.zespri.com under "What's New".
