Manawatu Family's $10,000 Instant Kiwi Win

Manawatu Family's $10,000 Instant Kiwi Win Evidence It Could Happen to Anyone

A Sanson family always felt they were too 'normal' to win anything, until they won $10,000 on a $1 Instant Kiwi ticket, says NZ Lotteries Chief Executive Todd McLeay.

The winning ticket was purchased by a Sanson father-of-two who informed his disbelieving wife of his $1 Polar Plunge ticket win over the phone.

"He rang up and said, 'You know how we never win anything – we've just won ten grand!' said the lucky winner's wife.

The woman says she kept calm and wasn't too quick to get excited.

"I didn't believe him, he thought he'd won $50 another time but it turned out he had read the ticket wrong.

"But this one was for real."

"It just goes to show that normal people win these things," she says.

Amy Harvey, from Pak N' Save Palmerston North, where the ticket was purchased, says the winner was shocked by his win.

"He scratched the ticket in-store then came up to the counter for me to check it. He wasn't sure if he'd won $1,000 or $10,000 and when I told him he'd won the $10,000 he couldn't believe it.

"He was quite exuberant vocally, and then he asked for a seat," said Ms Harvey.

The winning couple packed their kids in their car and headed straight to Wellington to claim their $10,000 prize, one of the game's six top prizes.
