Secondary School Students to Receive Grants

This year PricewaterhouseCoopers has awarded a record 19 grants to New Zealand secondary school students under the two strands of the Firm’s Schools Programme.

A total of 48 grants have now been made over the three years the programme has been in place, with 17 awarded in 2005 and 12 awarded in 2004, the inaugural year.

The two strands of the programme are the Career Assist Schools Programme (“CASP”), and the Foundation Career Assist Schools Programme (“Foundation CASP”) which is restricted to students at schools with decile ratings between one and seven.

David Randell, lead partner for the CASP, said PricewaterhouseCoopers made the grants to 19 outstanding all-round students.

“Over the past three years we have looked for students who boast strengths in a range of areas, who are thinking about commerce as a career, and who we believed had the potential to be future business leaders,” he said. “This year’s recipients are no exception, best demonstrated by the fact that we have awarded more scholarships than ever this year.”

The students will receive financial assistance toward university fees, as well as mentoring support, and some will have the chance to work for PricewaterhouseCoopers during their university holidays. More than 60 students from more than 40 schools participating in the Schools Programme around New Zealand were nominated.

David Randell said the calibre of nominations was extremely high. “This year’s recipients were an exceptionally talented group – they are a real credit to their families, teachers and schools and they should be very proud of what they have achieved.”

Grants were also made under the banner of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Foundation, a charitable trust established in 2004 which co-ordinates the Firm’s community involvement. Lead trustee Kathryn Roberts said the programme enabled PricewaterhouseCoopers to “offer grants and mentoring support to students from more diverse backgrounds and a greater number of schools”.

Four of the 19 students are recipients of grants under the Foundation programme.
