Local iwi bless Kupe Gas Project
A critical milestone in the Kupe Gas Project was reached today, with a karakia held to formally bless the Project.
The karakia was organised and led by local hapu, Ngati Tu and Ngati Manuhiakai.
It was held on the Inaha
Road site where construction of the Project’s onshore
production station will begin over the next few
weeks.
Kupe Project Director Peter Ashford said the
karakia was a significant milestone.
“We have worked closely for a long time with local iwi and to have them perform a karakia for the Project for us today is fantastic,” Mr Ashford said.
“We are grateful for the
way local iwi have worked with us to help to plan the
karakia. It is an important and touching milestone for all
of us.”
The karakia was given by Ron Hudson, a kaumatua
of Nga Ruahine.
Formal approval to proceed with the Kupe Gas Project was given in June and work since then has focused on preparing for construction. Work to upgrade Lower Inaha Road will be the first sign of construction getting underway, and is due to begin this month.
