Christchurch manufacturers scoop industry awards.

Christchurch based manufacturers, Talbot Plastics Limited and Elastomer Products Limited, were amongst the major prize winners at the New Zealand Plastics Industry Design Awards 2006, held in Auckland on Friday 13 October, winning 12 awards - 5 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze awards.

The awards ceremony, held every 2 years, recognises the innovation and excellence within the New Zealand plastics industry and presents awards for a wide range of process and product categories. The awards are judged by a panel of judges who pool hundreds of hours of experience in plastics technologies, in environmental management, and in design.

“It was great to see Christchurch companies do so well across the major categories”, says Elastomer Managing Director, Tom Thomson. “These awards recognise the developments in technology and products and acknowledge the hard work and contribution of our team members in making our individual companies and the wider industry successful”.

Talbot Plastics received the gold awards for injection moulding and tool making and six other awards for a range of new products due for release to the public in the coming months. Talbot also picked up a special new Environmental Management Systems award. Elastomer Products picked up gold awards for extrusion technology and for the building products section.

“Innovation is the future for New Zealand manufacturers”, says Steve Wilson, Managing Director of Talbot Plastics. “Our companies are faced with increasing levels of competition, both domestically and from overseas and these awards show that we are keeping ourselves at the leading edge for technology and product design when meeting our customers’ needs. The environmental prize is an example of that process. For years, the plastic industry’s waste management and environmental sustainable practices have been under scrutiny and this award shows that we have committed to maintaining the standards in all areas of our business”.

CMA Chief Executive John Walley has offered his congratulations to the winning companies and says their success is an example of New Zealand manufacturers innovating and competing with the best in the world. “New Zealand needs a lot more manufacturing companies like Talbot and Elastomer”, says Mr. Walley.
