Training groups leading the way in manufacturing

Cooperative work by training groups is a major step in the right direction, says Business NZ.

Today, eight industry training organisations (ITOs) involved in the manufacturing industry launch a Competitive Manufacturing Initiative – a shared approach to manufacturing skills development, with new standards and qualifications that are consistent with similar ones in Australia.

The ITOs cover a large part of the manufacturing sector, including engineering, plastics, furniture, textiles and manufacturing related to the forestry, dairy and seafood sectors.

Business NZ Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly said the initiative was a great example of industry-led training focusing on the right things.

“Skills development, sharing best practice, harmonisation of standards with Australia, and the development of standards and qualifications focused on improved performance – this is exactly where industry training should be focused,” Mr O’Reilly said.

“It’s helpful to see this aggregated approach, building on the elements that are common to several different manufacturing industries. The scope of the qualifications envisaged – from entry-level right through to top managers and business owners – is also exemplary.

“This is important because manufacturing is vital to our future. Manufacturing is helping to transform New Zealand from a commodity-based economy to a high-value, knowledge economy. It creates 43% of our exports, contributes around $20 billion to our GDP every year, and employs one in every six New Zealanders.

“The ITOs involved are to be congratulated.”
